Around the 1860s the pakanga with the Pakeha had already begun. Steamers were plying the river, with their cannons on board. Maori were taunting the soldiers, our tupuna died in discriminately. “Kua horahora katoa”. They died where they fell, their koiwi were picked up and taken to be buried on Taupiri Maunga.

The hapuu is registered as Ngaati Naho, though Ngaati Mahuta and Ngaati Hine have strong influence in the district. Horahora may have once been called Ngaati Pareue. Other hapuu with links are Ngaati Whaawhaakia, Ngaati Hikairo, Ngaati Hourua and Ngaati Tahinga. Today, the principle hapuu is Ngaati Pou.
